How Intentional Communication Can Engage Your Team

The right way.

Good communication isn't about giving people more information.

It’s about being deliberate about what people actually need to know—and when they need to know it.🙌

Before sending an email, making an announcement, starting a meeting, or moving a project forward, stop and ask three questions:

1. Who needs this information?

Not everyone. Identify who will decide, act, or be affected.

2. What do they need to understand?

Information without context can create more questions than answers.

What does this person need to understand to do their job, decide, or respond appropriately?

3. What happens if they don’t know?

This question often gets overlooked.

Could it cause a missed deadline, a wrong decision, rework, or a frustrated member, client, or stakeholder?

➡️What happens if a message goes in the wrong direction?

Here's the truth: Communication becomes much more effective when you answer these questions *before* the information goes out, not after confusion starts.🤔

The goal isn't to commu...

7 Business and Communication Insights from Dolly Parton

The real deal.

Around the world, people continue to pay tribute to Dolly Parton's legacy.

What stands out about Dolly's life is her simplicity and lack of pretension.

Whatever she was doing—singing on stage, acting in a film, or giving a one-on-one interview—Dolly always seemed down-to-earth.

Here are 7 takeaways from her life that we can apply to business, communication, and our own lives:

🔷On showing up: It was no secret; Dolly often spoke about wearing wigs. Why pretend, she said? Although she had a public image, the woman was genuine.

🔷On relating to people: The 80-year-old legend made people feel seen. Whether singing to millions or talking to one person, she communicated with warmth and without pretense. Not every celebrity or leader can do this. Dolly was straightforward; she spoke plainly, and people listened.

🔷On curiosity: Dolly believed curiosity could change a life.

In 1995, she launched her "Imagination Library" in her home state of Tennessee. Children around the globe have rece...

Successful Leaders Own Their Communication

Underestimating clarity is dangerous in business.

Without clarity, there's confusion. ⬅️

The result is poor communication that causes assumptions, delays, and weakens trust.

🚩It's almost impossible to execute ideas when people are confused.

In A/E/C, unclear communication increases risk.

One thing I often hear from clients: “Everyone thought someone else handled it.”

This is not a business strategy.

Successful leaders own their communication. 💯

They model straightforward communication because they know their teams are watching.

How to Deepen Relationships By Reading Body Language

You know how to build a room.

But do you know how to read a room?

Technical skills only get you so far.

In business, growing revenue isn't about technology or job titles.

It's about spotting subtle communication cues that give you:

🔷Greater influence
🔷New levels of respect
🔷Deeper connections

To get ahead, notice both verbal and nonverbal cues.

Pay attention to others' words, pacing, gestures, and expressions.

Here's the truth: Reading body language is key to negotiating and resolving conflict.

I learned this 30 years ago so I know it works. 💯

People who can read a room also exude confidence that most competitors lack.

Notice clues in your next interaction and start reading the room for a competitive edge.

Training Only Pays Off When It's Applied

In the last six months, I've seen three doctors for minor issues.

Three doctors. Three different minor ailments.

All three suggested over-the-counter treatments, and I agreed with their advice.

One treatment involves using a small machine several times a week. Even with insurance, I still pay $50 out of pocket each month.💰

Despite paying for the device every month, I still haven’t used it.

Maybe I’m just too lazy to set it up. I could easily use it while watching videos or TV, and the treatment doesn’t hurt at all.

The box just sits there collecting dust.

I keep it out where I can see it to remind myself, but even then, I keep paying $50 a month without using it.

I’m sharing this because the same thing often happens with training programs.

🎯People who actually use what they learn in training see real results and do well.

Others just let the training materials collect dust.

These employees end up complaining about delays, coworkers, or subcontractors. They stay stuck, waiting for things to improve...

The Real Issue A/E/C Executives Are Dancing Around

Most industry leaders I speak with aren’t worried about strategy.

Instead, their main concern is execution through people.

✅They know the plan.

✅They know the numbers.

✅They know the market.

Here's the truth about what keeps them up at night:

“Can my leaders actually move the ball forward without me in the room?”

Communication gaps don’t show up as “communication problems.”

Instead, they appear as rework, missed signals, slow decision-making, and shaky client trust.

Addressing these hidden challenges is the real leadership issue in 2026.

It's not solved by another process or framework.

It’s solved by elevating conversations within the firm.

Leaning into Leadership in 2026

The best project leaders don’t bark directives or lean on authority.

They use coaching as a core leadership tool—creating clarity, not confusion. 🎯

Combining coaching and leadership improves handoffs, documentation, and multi-generational teams communication.

Imagine your PMs, supers, and estimators sparking curiousity with open-ended questions.

Engagement uncovers blind spots and helps close feedback loops.

It also bolsters morale and impacts the talent pool. 📈

Strong, empathetic leaders draw ideas out of their teams.

They avoid unnecessary directives, invite perspectives, and make people feel valued.

🚩AI may streamline tasks, but it can’t fix confidence and unclear communication.

To develop stronger communicators in 2026, Top Tier Communicator training is the place to begin.

Strategic Networking Grows Business

Showing up at a networking event or conference doesn't count as business development.

Choose events carefully and strategically so you attract new relationships and opportunities.

Yes, this includes making small talk 😮

Before putting something on your calendar, consider:

🎯Will your ideal clients be there?

🎯What is your intention?

🎯Who do you want to meet, and why?

🎯How will you mingle and meet new people?

🎯How will you introduce yourself?

There is an art and science to successful networking.

Do you and your teams know how to generate leads and create exciting opportunities at seemingly ordinary events?

If not, you're wasting precious time and your firm is losing money.

PS: Get your nose out of your phone!
